Match Preview - Rotherham United vs Manchester City U21 (EFL Trophy)

Tonight sees Rotherham United in Vertu Trophy action at the AESSEAL New York Stadium against Manchester City U21. / Sky.

After a historic result this past Saturday saw Rotherham United win away at Oakwell for the first time in 55 years against Barnsley thanks to a 64th minute goal from Kian Spence, attention now turns to the Vertu Trophy as Rotherham welcome the U21 team of Manchester City to the AESSEAL New York Stadium with victory tonight putting them into the last 16 of the competition. Rotherham last faced the Manchester City U21 team in the campaign that saw them win the trophy in the 2021-22 season (then named Papa John's Trophy due to sponsorship reasons) at Wembley that April. Back then, we saw some now familiar stars in the Manchester City U21 side which were defeated 5-0 by Rotherham on the night such as:
  • Rico Lewis - (Still actively at Manchester City and gets occasional features in the first team.)
  • James McAtee - (Left City to move to Nottingham Forest in the summer for a fee close to £30 million.)
  • Romeo Lavia - (Left City for Southampton in 2022 but a year later joined Chelsea for £53 million plus add-ons after rejecting Liverpool.)
  • Liam Delap - (City gave him various loan stints at Stoke City, Preston North End and Hull City before signing with Ipswich Town permanently in 2024 with a deal up to £20 million before joining Chelsea this summer after a release clause of £30 million was triggered.)
  • Nico O'Reilly - (Similarly to Rico Lewis, he is still at Manchester City and gets opportunities to feature in the first side.)
Tonight's fixture kicks off a string of four consecutive home games for Matt Hamshaw's side who will want to continue momentum after that huge win over the weekend alongside their positive last five results (DWWWW). Victory would put the Millers second in the group, but if they win by a margin of more than four goals that would put them ahead of Bolton Wanderers' who aren't scheduled to play in the competition again until November 11th against bottom of the group Oldham Athletic.
